element six, a member of the de beers group of companies, announced that it has developed diafilm etc700, a new thermal grade of synthetic diamond produced by chemical vapor deposition (cvd) that is both thermally and electrically conductive and applicable for high-power density devices.
element six has announced a new heat cvd diamond heat spreader. (element six)
according to a press release, diafilm diamond heat spreaders are thermally conductive up to 700 w/mk, three times more effective than ceramic solutions. the etc700 also does not require a metal coating because of its electrical conductivity, which reduces frequency-dependent conductive losses.
the release continued, “diafilm etc700 outperforms all other commercially available metallized, non-diamond heat spreader materials or common metal solutions. a larger conduction cross-section enables better rf performance by improving the ground-plane isolation. diafilm etc700 maintains a high bulk thermal conductivity, whilst the bulk electrical conductivity reduces capacitive coupling between ground planes at low frequencies, and reduces conductive losses at higher frequencies.”
element six claims that its heat spreaders have the “highest known thermal conductivity of any solid material at room temperature.” the company is offering its heat spreaders at a variety of sizes, thicknesses, and metallization.
"for more than two decades, element six's cvd diamond has proven to be the most effective heat management material, far surpassing the performance of competing materials such as copper or ceramics," said thomas obeloer, business development manager at element six.
"our team of developers is committed to continually improving upon our already industry-leading technology to meet new demands in advanced electronics and high frequency devices—making possible the next generation of consumer and commercial devices."
