Honduran student works on summer project 3-D printing tubes for heat exchangers

gabriel vasquez, an engineering student from honduras, spent his summer at the university of arizona (tucson, ariz.) as part of the summer program, a learning research experience, working on a research project that featured 3-d printing tubes for enhanced, internal-flow heat exchangers.

exchange program this summer. (university of arizona)

according to a report on the school’s website, vasquez had created a startup with classmates in honduras, craft3d, which uses 3-d printing to improve technology, so this summer project was a perfect fit. craft3d offers courses in robotics, electronics, and 3-d printing.

by using 3-d printing on the heat exchanger tubes, vasquez and other researchers are hoping to lower the cost and waste associated with manufacturing the products.

"the students participating in this program gain a comprehensive higher education experience, meaning they participate in research and academic activities, and they are also part of the ua and tucson community," said nadia alvarez mexia, director of study arizona: short-term programs.

"these students are immersed in a new culture, both inside and outside of the classroom."

vasquez said in the article, “"i had a classmate in honduras who insisted on me doing the ua summer program a year or two ago," he said. "he kept insisting that i participate in the program, and i am very grateful to him.”

he added, “i believe scientific research eliminates boundaries between countries, and i would like to become a science diplomat. the summer program was a great experience for that goal."
