the national academy of inventors (nai) has announced that 155 renowned inventors have been selected to receive nai fellow status at the seventh annual nai conference taking place in washington, d.c. in april.
the 2017 class of nai fellows brings the total number to 912, representing more than 250 universities and governmental and non-profit research institutions. among those who have been honored include 52 recipients of the u.s. national medal of technology and innovation and u.s. medal of science and 29 nobel laureates.
according to an nai press release, “election to nai fellow status is the highest professional accolade bestowed to academic inventors who have demonstrated a prolific spirit of innovation in creating or facilitating outstanding inventions that have made a tangible impact on quality of life, economic development, and welfare of society.”
one of this year’s honorees is dr. suhash l. shinde, the director of the university of notre dame’s center for sustainable energy. his previous work includes positions at sandia national laboratories and ibm’s microelectronics research division.
according to a report from notre dame, dr. shinde holds more than 60 u.s. patents and 18 international patents, has published numerous reports, and edited three books. his areas of study have included nanoscale thermal transport, 3-d integration of microprocessors, memory, and photonic components, and concentrated solar technologies.
“his inventions in these areas have applications at ibm and sandia in the form of solutions for advanced thermal management for mainframe computers and technology portfolio for high thermal conductivity aluminum nitride modules (ibm) and projects in phonon interactions and ultrafast imaging (sandia),” the report continued.
regarding the announcement of his being selected as an nai fellow, dr. shinde said, “i am deeply honored to be named among such a prestigious group of inventors, alongside university presidents, senior leaders of research universities, nobel laureates, and more. i look forward to joining my fellow inductees at the nai’s seventh annual conference in april.”
to be selected as nai fellows, honorees were nominated by their peers and evaluated by an 18-member selection committee.
