Toshiba Rolls Out Reference Design for Control of Server and Data Center Cooling Fans

las vegas -- consumer electronics show (ces) -toshiba america electronic components, inc. (taec)*, a committed leader that collaborates with technology companies to create breakthrough designs, has launched its latest reference design for cooling fan motor control. the reference design for servers and data centers fan control is built around the toshiba tmpm375 microcontroller (mcu) with unique vector engine (ve) technology and peripherals to greatly simplify complex motor control designs in high-performance cooling fans and similar products. taec will demonstrate the cooling fan reference design this week at ces 2015 in las vegas, nevada.

"the next generation of cloud computing and data centers will require power-efficient cooling fan systems with greatly reduced noise," said deepak mithani, senior director, mixed-signal business unit, system lsi group at taec. "our cooling fan reference design demonstrates advanced vector motor control methods implemented in a space- and cost-efficient solution, enhancing power efficiency, reducing noise level and improving the overall operating cost of data center systems."

toshiba's approach to improving motor controls is the implementation of specific hardware accelerators within its mcu products. its ve technology employs vector control in hardware to aid in handling of complex field-oriented vector control and space-vector modulation methods, greatly reducing system processor loading compared to dsp- or fpga-based vector control, while delivering highly precise, efficient and quiet motor operations.

vector control methodology was long considered cost-prohibitive because of the computational power requirements, software complexity and associated hardware cost. modern processor and custom accelerator technologies have emerged, enabling affordable solutions to these challenges. toshiba's offerings in this area include its m370 family of ve mcus.

the new cooling control reference designs feature various options ranging from low-cost single phase brushless dc motor control to high performance vector controlled brushless dc motor systems that include the following toshiba products:

--  tmpm375fsdmg - vector engine motor control mcu
--  tk7s10n1 - n-ch 100v/7a power mosfet
--  tmpm369fdfg - general-purpose 32-bit communications mcu
--  tmp89fm82tdug - general-purpose 8-bit mcu
--  tb67b008ftg - 25v/3a brushless dc motor drivers
--  tb67z800ftg - 3-ch 24v/3a half-bridge drivers for brushless dc motors
--  tb6605ftg - three-phase brushless dc motor controller

the arm(®) cortex(®)-m3 core-based tmpm375fsdmg incorporates an advanced vector control hardware design that lowers system cost for field-oriented control. it features a very small ss0p30 package (7.6 mm x 10 mm), reduced component count (as it does not require analog front end), high-speed operation (25ns pwm) and extended temperature range (-40°c to +105°c). combining the tmpm375fsdmg with the peripheral components and tools in the reference design will accelerate time to market and reduce software development effort for oems developing high-performance fans for advanced industrial, space- and mission-critical applications.

availability

samples of the new server/data control cooling fan reference design are available now. mass production will begin later this month.
