certainteed corporation of malvern, pa. has applied for a u.s. patent for a roof product that will improve thermal management by storing thermal heat during a heating cycle, vents the excess heat, and releases heat during a cooling cycle.

the product is composed of a thermal heat storage layer, a vent layer that has channels to dissipate heat over the length of the roof and a flame retardant to suppress fire in the vent layer or a radiant layer, according to the patent application. these layers form the unitary product.
the vents will send “excess heat from an eave of the roof up to a ridge of the roof and out to atmosphere.” the roof would consist of a roof deck and a roof outer barrier with the product layered in between.
