{"id":2426,"date":"2015-01-19T13:09:59","date_gmt":"2015-01-19T17:09:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/coolingzone.com\/blog\/?p=2426"},"modified":"2018-03-17T19:08:40","modified_gmt":"2018-03-17T23:08:40","slug":"coolchip-kinetic-cooling-technology-shown-ces-2015","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.coolingzone.com\/blog\/2015\/01\/19\/coolchip-kinetic-cooling-technology-shown-ces-2015\/","title":{"rendered":"CoolChip Kinetic Cooling Technology Shown at CES 2015"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.coolchiptechnologies.com\/\">CoolChip Technologies<\/a>, a Boston, MA based start up in thermal management has released their Kinetic Cooler.\u00a0 The technology, an &#8220;air bearing heat exchanger&#8221; does not use a fan, and is based on work done at Sandia Labs in the creation of the &#8220;Sandia Cooler&#8221;.\u00a0 In the <a href=\"https:\/\/share.sandia.gov\/news\/resources\/news_releases\/cooler\/\">Sandia Labs 2011 announcement<\/a> about their technology, they note:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In a conventional CPU cooler, the heat transfer bottleneck is the boundary layer of \u201cdead air\u201d that clings to the cooling fins. With the Sandia Cooler, heat is efficiently transferred across a narrow air gap from a stationary base to a rotating structure. The normally stagnant boundary layer of air enveloping the cooling fins is subjected to a powerful centrifugal pumping effect, causing the boundary layer thickness to be reduced to ten times thinner than normal. This reduction enables a dramatic improvement in cooling performance within a much smaller package.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the high speed rotation of the heat exchanger fins minimizes the problem of heat exchanger fouling. The way the redesigned cooling fins slice through the air greatly improves aerodynamic efficiency, which translates to extremely quiet operation. The Sandia Cooler\u2019s benefits have been verified by lab researchers on a proof-of-concept prototype approximately sized to cool computer CPUs.
