thermal management in smartphones is of particular concern in recent months because of the ongoing saga of samsung and the thermal runaway issues it had with the galaxy note 7. microsoft, which has purchased the surfacephone.com domain name according to a report on mobile & apps, will be running intel’s kaby lake processor, which will need a thermal management system to match its output.

the microsoft surface book 4 tablet had a hybrid liquid cooling system that used a vapor chamber to spread heat away from the processor out to the device’s fan or to the area under the kickstand. when at low power usage, the fan does not run but when necessary the fan kicks in to increase the amount of heat that is dissipated.

it has been speculated that the surface phone would utilize a similar liquid cooling technology with a flat heat pipe just as it did in the lumia line of phones in 2015.
