WIRED article calls 2017 the year battery life gets fixed

in a recent wired article, david pierce writes that 2017 will be the year that gadget makers, including  smartphone or laptop manufacturers such as asus, huawei, hp, and qualcomm will find a way to fix the problem of short battery life.

pierce reported on the presentation by huawei president george zhao at the recent ces 2017 in las vegas, nevada and noted that much of the talk surrounded the honor 6x smartphone’s extended battery life. the zenfone 3 zoom from asus is promising a battery that can last 42 days and qualcomm has released details about its extended and quick-charging battery.

“everyone who doesn’t actually build gadgets has for years insisted that battery life is essential,” pierce wrote. “smartphone manufacturers are finally starting to give people what they want. they don’t have any other choice.”

with users taking advantage of their mobile devices at greater rates than ever before, using them more often, using more features, and using them for longer periods, battery life is a critical component to the experience.

pierce explained, “a dead battery was once a mild inconvenience, but for many people it now feels like having your life ripped away and cast into a black hole. a dead phone is like a house without power.”

in order to expand battery life, thermal management has become an increasingly important consideration for designers. new options such as think heat pipes and vapor chambers, cases that act as heat sinks to dissipate heat away from the processor and operating systems that minimize the impact of unused programs have all been explored by companies looking to cool gadgets.

as battery life continues to draw more interest from industry, researchers have taken up the cause of finding better methods for producing the batteries themselves, as coolingzone recently highlighted in its article on the joint center for energy storage research (jcesr).

pierce concluded, “but this year, at least a few companies showed a bit of sense. they’ve realized that thin gadgets are cool, new features are exciting, and sentient robots will inherit the earth, but the best gadget is the one that turns on when you need it to.”
