Fujitsu and Oracle launch M12 servers with new liquid cooling system

fujitisu and oracle announced the release of two new servers in early april, the m12-2 and m12-2s, which feature the new sparc64 xii processor that had been announced last year and a new hybrid liquid loop cooling (llc) system.

fujitsu and oracle have announced a new server with sparc processors.

according to fujitsu, “fujitsu sparc m12 servers achieve the world's highest per cpu core performance in arithmetic processing, offering dramatic improvements for a wide range of database workloads, from mission-critical systems on premises to big data processing in the cloud.”

with its announcement, fujitsu emphasized its commitment to sparc (scalable processor architecture) that is a continuation of the reduced instruction set computing (risc) instruction set architecture (isa) that was originally created by sun microsystems (which was later bought by oracle).

edward screven, chief corporate architect, oracle corporation, said, “oracle and fujitsu have worked together for more than three decades to produce sparc systems satisfying the demanding requirements of mission critical infrastructure. fujitsu sparc m12 servers featuring the new sparc64 xii processor for extreme core performance is an exciting addition to the sparc family, allowing customers to address their most difficult computing challenges with systems that offer both high performance and enterprise reliability.”

an article on hpcwire.com explained, “the company notably jumped from the sparc chip, which it used in building japan’s k computer, to arm for the post k computer now under development as part of japan’s flagship 2020 project. the latter project has experienced delay which many observers attributed to challenges adapting the arm architecture for supercomputing. in any case, delivering on its sparc roadmap may reassure the sparc camp, including a large oracle customer base, that fujitsu isn’t planning to walk away from them.”

in addition to featuring the sparc processor, the fujitsu m12-2 will also include the company’s hybrid cooling technology that combines liquid cooling with convection cooling.

according to the fujitsu website, “in order to cool hot spots with air, heat radiation units, including fans, must be located near hot spots. however this often results in components like memory or io being further away from the processors. distance between cpu and memory largely affects memory access time, degrading overall performance. in liquid cooling, heat radiation units can be separated from hot spots because heat is moved via cool liquid tubes to heat radiation units. this allows processors and other components like memory and io to be close enough to reduce access time.”
