Dutch company using servers to provide a hot shower

starting in august, 42 households in the netherlands will enjoy a free shower that is heated by computer servers thanks to a new project from nerdalize, a dutch company dedicated to sustainable computing power and providing free server-heat to everyone in the netherlands, according to a press release on the company website

the company has developed a novel heating system that utilizes excess heat from computer servers that nerdalize claims can cut as much as €300 off the yearly heating bills for dutch homes and also cut back significantly on carbon dioxide emissions.

the company explained, “in datacenters this residual heat needs to be cooled away, leading to high energy usage. through the proceeds of a crowdfunding campaign, in which more than 200 people have invested so far, nerdalize wants to equip the first 42 households with their heating system.”’

in 2015, nerdalize worked with dutch utilities provider eneco to put servers into five households and used the heat that the servers produced to warm the building through a special radiator. this new system connects the servers directly to the home’s central heating system.

“this way, the heat can be utilised throughout the year for hot water,” nerdalize said. “this setup saves money for households, but also for companies and researchers. as nerdalize does not need to build an expensive datacenter, companies and researchers can compute for 50% lower costs!”

the company claims that 3,500 people have expressed interest in the heating system and that more than €250,000 has been raised on the crowdfunding platform symbid.

“if we reach our target amount in a month, we can start equipping the first houses with our server-heater from august onwards!” said nerdalize co-founder boaz leupe.

the project was recently highlighted by the verge.

“it’s an ambitious project,” the article said, “and one that just sounds so clever, killing a number of inefficiencies at a single stroke. however, there are lot of unresolved questions about nerdalize’s plans. like, will companies be happy about having their data sitting in people’s houses? and how will customers feel when they need to let an engineer in to fix their malfunctioning servers?”
