JEDEC 51 Testing Assures Consistent Thermal Evaluation Data

norwood, ma, october 2005 – advanced thermal solutions (ats) is now providing jedec 51 testing services, which offer component, board, and system manufacturers a uniform system for measuring thermal attributes and controlling junction temperatures in semiconductor devices.

ats tests to all 11 current jedec 51 standards, which cover various environmental and test board conditions for common package types such as wire bond chips, leaded surface mount components, and perimeter and area array through-hole leaded packages. chipmakers and board manufacturers complying with jedec 51 test standards can use and pass along important junction temperature values for wide-ranging applications and a variety of package designs. by qualifying how a die behaves thermally, fewer parts need to be tested and effective cooling solutions are found more easily.

jedec 51 standards were developed by the electronic industries association to provide a standardized method for characterizing ic packages. the test results can be duplicated and relied upon when developing thermal management solutions for different applications.

ats can test multiple boards in fully-automated lab facilities in both massachusetts and in bussum, the netherlands. the jedec 51 testing equipment, also manufactured by and available to purchase from ats, includes laboratory wind tunnels, wind tunnel controllers, thermocouples, and automatic temperature and velocity scanners. a full testing schedule typically takes 1-2 weeks.

advanced thermal solutions (www.qats.com) is a leading engineering and manufacturing company supplying complete thermal and mechanical packaging solutions from analysis and testing to final production. ats provides a wide range of heat sinks and laboratory-grade thermal instrumentation, along with thermal design consulting services and training.
