the necklace was designed by engineer sam white and uses plastic orbs filled with a proprietary liquid that he developed while studying at olin college (needham, mass.). the liquid was initially created to benefit dairy farmers by increasing the amount of milk could be cooled with refrigeration systems that promethean power had built for rural areas.

according to the article, white came up with the idea for a personal cooling product while living in india. his wife struggled with the heat in mumbai, so white froze his liquid and created essentially a necklace of ice cubes that stay frozen far longer than water.

“he expected the necklaces would be a work accessory, especially for janitors or chefs who work in uncomfortable environments,” the article explained. “but comments on his kickstarter campaign suggested a bigger audience: women going through menopause and patients with multiple sclerosis or cancer.”

according to the nano-ice website, the cooling is expected to last as much as two hours and it weighs one pound. the liquid will freeze completely in three to four hours.
