ADATA showcases unique cooling for Project Jellyfish at CES 2018

according to multiple reports, including tom’s hardware and anandtech.com, taiwanese memory and storage manufacturer adata technology revealed an exotic cooling solutions for its project jellyfish ddr4 dimm at the recent ces 2018 show in las vegas, nevada.

the new memory design is itself not unusual, but adata showcased a working prototype of a fluid-filled plastic shell that surrounded the memory.

“adata is the first that we know of to combine the chemical in a dram module. we were told the company has a patent on the design, but don't expect to purchase jellyfish dram anytime soon,” said tom’s hardware. “we were told these are working prototypes but not final designs. at this time, we're not even sure if this product will come to market.”

the article explained that the jellyfish has a row of led at the top of the circuit board that change colors when powered on, but that the memory was not used to run a system in the adata booth and this kept viewers from knowing the full cooling capability of the fluid.

tom’s hardware concluded, “if these come to market, we should expect some way to cool the liquid. an expansion chamber would also help to raise the level of fluid in the module. in the prototypes we saw on display, the liquid didn't cover every dram package on the board. the top packages would go without liquid cooling in an upright desktop computer.”

anandtech.com added, “one caveat, which adata noted, is that the prototype was not completely filled. this would mean that when placed vertically in a case, a couple of dram chips would not be covered.” it also explained that adata has a patent on the technology.
