Immersion cooling system could be used for next-gen EV batteries

a recent blog post by charles morris of evannex, which is an aftermarket retailer for tesla parts, questioned whether or not the next generation of tesla electric vehicles (ev) would use a novel immersion cooling system to optimize battery performance.

battery performance is intrinsically tied to temperature. unlike other manufacturers that have used air cooling, such as the nissan leaf, tesla has always gone for bigger and more powerful systems that required liquid cooling to ensure battery reliability.

with new, larger vehicles in the works from tesla, morris questions whether the current liquid cooling set-ups will be adequate. he highlighted a taiwan-based startup, xing mobility, which has demonstrated a new supercar with 1,341 horsepower and that can reach 100 km/h in only 1.8 seconds. the max speed is listed as more than 270 km/h.

in the press release announcing the supercar, which xing named miss r, the company indicated that the secret was in a patented immersion cooling technology. the xing battery system uses stackable, lego-inspired battery modules containing 42 lithium-ion cells sitting in 3m novec 7200 engineered fluid.

xing claims that it is the first company to announce its use of novec fluids for modularized battery cooling in electric vehicles. according to xing, this cooling system allows for the high-discharge power output, increased stability and a high level of reliability due to the fluid’s heat transfer capability.

“the use of novec engineered fluids to immersion cool ev batteries is a breakthrough application, addressing the critical performance needs of the market in a new and disruptive way. 3m is delighted to work with cutting-edge companies like xing mobility to leverage the unique properties of novec engineered fluids, in their innovative designs, to deliver such extraordinary performance gains to the industry”, said michael garceau, who leads 3m’s market development effort for ev battery immersion cooling.
