according to a report from news.com.au, dell unveiled its latest iteration of laptops at the annual consumer electronics show in las vegas (ces 2018), including the high-performance xps 13, which boasts a thin design and gore cooling silica aerogels that are also used in the mars rover.

the material, according to the article, provides low thermal conductivity and acts as insulation directing the heat into the airstream and preventing it from reaching the surface of the laptop. by pushing the heat into the fan airflow, heat is dissipated faster to enhance the performance of the processor and the graphics cards.

also, by keeping the heat from reaching the exterior case of the laptop, it enhances the comfort of users.

in a press release, dell explained, “inside its thinner, lighter design, the dell power manager delivers power just when you need it, while gore thermal insulation, the same silica aerogels used in the mars rover to diffuse and dissipate heat, introduces an innovative material into the thermal design to keep the system cool while it works hard.”

dell has been working on the technology for four years and partnered with gore, best known for its gore-tex fabric, to create a packaging that would hold the aerogel insulator in place without breaking it.

in addition to its performance benefits, the new laptop also is power-efficient and recycle-friendly, according to the news.com.au article.
