Apple has released a new 15-inch MacBook Pro that could run you as much as $7,000 depending on the configuration and also comes with an option to upgrade to an Intel i9 processor that is overclockable, but users have reported that it throttles the CPU processing speed to avoid thermal issues.

According to Motherboard, users on YouTube, Reddit, Facebook, and Discord are running benchmark tests on the new i9 MacBook, pushing the six-core, 2.9 GHz processor, and are not seeing the desired results. As the article noted, this follows on the heels of Apple admitting it throttles iPhone batteries in older phones to push people to buy new ones.
“Redditor Aea discovered his MacBook pro slowed down after 5 minutes of running Prime 95—a CPU intensive number crunching program,” the article explained. “After just one minute of Prime 95, the i9 had dipped from a 2.9 to 2.5GHz. Cinbench—another benchmarking program—showed similar dips in performance. Several other redditors on the thread chimed in to say they’d gotten similar results and planned to return the MacBook Pro to Apple.”
On YouTube, David Lee (Dave2D) demonstrated the throttling issue. (The video can be viewed below.)
Lee’s review explained that the processing capability of the new MacBook Pro was impressive, he called it a “beast,” but that the chassis could not adequately cool the i9. Using Adobe Premiere, Lee showed that the MacBook could throttled the speed from 2.9 GHz to 2.2 GHz after only a few seconds to prevent overheating.
