Bitmain Technologies, a China-based bitcoin mining company and one of the largest in the world, has released the Antminer S9 Hydro, which a water-cooled SHA256 bitcoin miner that can reach a hashrate of nearly 18 trillion hashes per second (TH/s).

According to a report from Bitcoin.com, the new liquid cooling system in the Antminer Hydro reduces noise and makes it more energy efficient. The company claims that it has a wall power consumption of only 1,728 W and it is offering a external water circulator module that can use the dissipated heat into heat for homes.
The report continued, “According to Bitmain’s specs, while operating the chip temperature is around 5°C, which can help the device’s overall performance and efficiency. Bigger mining facilities with an outdoor water supply tethered to the new S9 Hydros will save roughly 8-12 percent in electricity costs.”
Bitmain also insists the new system will reduce noise by 20 decibels compared to air-cooled miners. The main beneficiary of this new system is larger mining facilities that are running multiple systems and have large maintenance and energy consumption costs.
“The company claims that over 95 percent of the S9 Hydro’s power consumption can be moved externally into a water circulation supply which will greatly reduce dust particles entering the machines as well,” the article added. “The S9 Hydro looks much larger than the traditional Antminer and resembles the size of GMO Group’s new B3 design.”
