Fujitsu recently announced that it was beginning sales of its PRIMERGY immersion cooling system for servers in Japan, with a global roll-out to follow. The system is designed to cool all of the devices in a server equally and without the need for large-scale cooling equipment, which reduces total power consumption of the server system.

According to the company, the immersion cooling system can reduce power consumption by 40 percent compared to air cooling. It also claims that the system allows users to double the server density in the same installation space.
“The cooling system also provides high energy efficiency because the server does not require internal cooling fans, boasting a power usage effectiveness (PUE) ratio of 1.07,” Fujitsu said in the press release. “This not only reduces the server system's overall power consumption, by approximately 40% compared to air cooling systems (including its cooling equipment), it also enables approximately double the server density in the same installation space, contributing to reductions in the total cost of ownership (TCO).”
It also noted that because the system did not emit the heat into the ambient, air conditioning equipment will not be necessary.
The system includes an immersion bath that minimizes the vaporization of the coolant. The fluid in use is easy to maintain because it is non-toxic, non-combustible, and does not deteriorate.
“Fujitsu provides a one-stop solution for everything from the installation of an immersion bath and coolant distribution units (CDUs) to plumbing, server operations maintenance work, and post-installation support, including equipment maintenance,” the release continued.
According to Fujitsu, the system has already been used by the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi where its low noise levels allowed it to be used near laboratories. The company also believes that this system can be incorporated in environments that previously were off-limits to servers because of the associated cooling costs or concerns over environmental damage (such as near oceans where salt air would corrode the devices).
