Evoke testing new electric motorcycle batteries for faster charging and greater range

Beijing, China-based startup Evoke Motorcycles is introducing a faster-charging battery, which the company claims can reach 80 percent of its capacity in just 15 minutes, for its line of electric motorcycles.

Evoke Motorcycle has announced research into a new, faster-charging battery.

According to a report from Electrek.co, Evoke’s current generation of batteries can be charged with a wall outlet and reach full charge in eight hours using 110 volts or fours hours on 220 volts.

“Evoke’s 2nd generation batteries are designed as a modular system intended for different applications,” the article explained. “The company says they can be daisy-chained together for use in other small and medium-size electric vehicles.”

The new batteries have an active thermal management system that combines software and hardware to keep the lithium-ion cells at the optimal operating range. This is expected to increase the efficiency and lifetime of the batteries.

“When we started the design process, we quickly understood that cell surface cooling wasn’t enough to effectively bring down temperatures to a safe range while ultra-fast charging,” said Chris Riether, VP of Engineering in a press release from the company. “Additionally, extensive design time went into creating a thermal cooling system that is inexpensive and light for small to mid-scale vehicles. Electric motorcycles and other small scale EVs don’t have the luxury of space like electric cars and buses.”

The Evoke second-gen battery is not the only new technology on the market, according to Electrek.co. Taiwanese electric scooter companies KYMCO and Gogoro have both announced new batteries as well.

The article concluded, “These new 2nd generation batteries by Evoke Motorcycles are even more exciting due to their higher tech thermal management systems, which opens the door to larger and more powerful vehicles.”
