Dr. Suresh V. Garimella, the R. Eugene and Susie E. Goodson Distinguished Professor in the Purdue University (West Lafayette, Ind.) School of Mechanical Engineering and director of the Cooling Technologies Research Center, is expected to be appointed by President Donald Trump to the prestigious National Science Board.
Dr. Suresh V. Garimella has been selected to join the National Science Board.
According to a report from the university, Dr, Garimella is one of seven appointments to the board. The members are selected for eminence in research and education. Dr. Garimella was nominated by Purdue president Mitch Daniels and received the support of all 11 Indiana national legislators.
The National Science Board was created in 1950 to oversee and establish policies for the National Science Foundation (NSF). The board acts as an independent adviser to the president and to Congress on matters related to science, engineering, and education.
“I am humbled and honored,” said Garimella in the announcement. “The NSF is a key driver of American research and tech innovation. I believe that this appointment is a recognition of Purdue’s leadership in science and engineering over its 150 years and in emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence and quantum computing.”
At Purdue, Dr. Garimella is the executive vice-president for research and partnerships and has overseen four straight record years of funding. The NSF accounted for 15% of Purdue’s funding in 2018.
Dr. Garimella has previously been named a Jefferson Science Fellow by the U.S. Department of State and worked with the State Department as a delegate to the International Energy Agency’s Committee on Energy Research and Technology and as a senior fellow on its Energy and Climate Partnership of the Americas.
His research interests include the fields of micro- and nano-scale transport phenomena, thermal management and energy efficiency in electronics, renewable/sustainable energy systems technology and policy, and materials processing.
