Australian company describes a novel approach to LED thermal management

Oxman Lighting, an innovative LED lighting company based in Australia, recently posted about its progressive cooling concept for LED that it claims will reduce the raw materials used, lower the weight of the final product, enhance cooling performance, and offers a compact, low-profile solution.

According to the Oxman website, the company’s Total Surface Heat Exchanger™ concept minimizes thermal resistance from the LED mounting point. This improves heat transfer beyond current methods.

“The concept uses a low weight Total Surface Heat Exchanger™, an LED array as well as a framed silicone lens for protection and light guidance with an optical efficiency of 90%,” the post explained. “Its key features are competitive simplicity and efficiency!”

To improve thermal management, the system transfers heat directly from the LED base and a heat exchanger to the “cooling agent.” Oxman claims that standard heat sink solutions produce as much as 20°C temperature gradient from the base of the LED to the tip of the heat sink fins, which causes a reduction in the temperature gradient between the heat sink and the ambient, reducing the amount of heat being dissipated and forcing larger heat sinks with greater surface area to be used.

“The cooling process in the Total Surface Heat ExchangerTM concept is achieved by unobstructed convection of the ambient cooling air past the smooth cooling surface of the heat exchanger and its ability to extract heat directly from the LED mounting base,” Oxman explained. “The LEDs are directly attached to the heat exchanger, which, on the reverse side, creates the high temperature difference that drives the convective cooling process so effectively.”

By utilizing almost the entire surface area of the heat exchanger for cooling and adding a framed silicone lens for surface cooling of the base, the Oxman system improves thermal performance in a smaller package. “The smooth surface of the heat exchanger supports the uninhibited flow of the cooling air, which is unlimited and enables direct contact with the plane mounting surface for heat transfer,” Oxman added.

The company claims that a 14 W LED downlight fitting using its Total Surface Heat Exchanger™ concept weighs just over 100 grams, produces 1,200 lumens, and achieves an L95 lifetime for 66,500 hours at 45°C.
