One Day Course: Practical Implementation of Liquid Cooling Systems

one-day course on october 25 , 2007

practical implementation of liquid cooling systems

wondering if you should be using liquid cooling?

do you need liquid cooling, but are concerned about cost and reliability?

faced by ever-increasing power densities, product developers are under growing pressure to consider liquid cooling in their designs, but are daunted by the many new technical challenges involved.

this course demystifies liquid cooling by examining these challenges and discussing practical solutions for each, drawing on experience gained in developing liquid cooling systems for consumer electronics products. emphasizing practice over theory, this course will give you all of the key information you need to implement reliable, cost-effective liquid cooling systems.

topics we will cover:

• when to use liquid cooling (and when not to)
• types of liquid cooling -- which one is best for you?
• performance
• all about components:

• coolants
• cold plates
• heat exchangers
• pumps
• tubing, hoses, and fittings

• system integration: the key to low cost and high reliability
• real-world problems and solutions

• coolant loss
• volume compensation
• freeze protection
• corrosion, erosion, plugging, and fouling
• biogrowth

• testing and validating your design
• common pitfalls and how to avoid them

if you are using or thinking about using liquid cooling, you should not miss this opportunity to learn from someone who has done it and knows what can go wrong. the insight from this course will save you hundreds of hours to get it right the first time.

over 95% of participants in a recent session of this course recommend or strongly recommend it to anyone using or planning to use liquid cooling. here are some comments made by those who have already taken this course:

  • ...excellent course on practical aspects of liquid cooling
  • ...very informative on overall system approach to liquid cooling
  • ...great, practical, experience-based information
  • ...very good presentation with lots of information not available from other sources
  • ,,,will strongly recommend this course to anyone concerned with reliability, corrosion, etc.

about the speaker

sean donnelly is a senior r&d engineer at mikros manufacturing, specializing in the thermal management of high power density electronics. since receiving a bs in mechanical engineering from rice university in 1991, he has engineered a diverse range of thermally challenging products. in recent years he has been a pioneer in the use of liquid cooling in low-cost, long-life applications, emphasizing a systems engineering approach to reliability assurance. he holds six us and numerous international patents, and is a member of imaps, sid, and spie.
