eGRAF® FREDDA™ Cools Panasonic Toughbook

company's latest thermal management technology allows
for the creation of three-dimensional forms to meet electronic designers needs

cleveland, oh – october 25, 2004 – graftech international ltd.'s egraf fredda™ thermal management solution is used to cool one of the newest ultraportable semirugged notebook computers introduced to the consumer market—the panasonic toughbook y2.

with a 14-inch lcd screen, more than 6 hours of battery life and a flip-top dvd/cd-rw combo drive, the toughbook y2 weighs only 3.4 pounds due in part to the lightweight egraf fredda™ natural graphite thermal management solution which keeps the laptop cool even after several hours of use and reduces parasitic energy loss of the battery by eliminating the need for powered cooling fans. the weight of egraf fredda™ material is typically 30 percent lighter than aluminum and 80 percent lighter than copper components of the same dimensions and in some applications displace traditional cooling fans/heat pipes which can provide a 50 percent overall weight savings in heat dissipating components.

"our egraf fredda™ technology in combination with an egraf spreadershield™ heat spreader is the only thermal management solution used to dissipate the heat from the intel 1.3ghz pentium m cpu and the graphics chip, in the y2," said dr. julian norley, ph.d. dic arsm, director of technology, advanced energy technology inc.

"the egraf fredda™ thermal management solution was customized to fit the threedimensional design and is attached above the chip-sets to spread the heat. another piece of egraf spreadershield™ material is on the bottom of the keyboard to further eliminate hot spots," norley continued.

latest thermal management solution expands design capabilities

graftech's egraf fredda™ thermal management solution is similar to the original egraf spreadershield™ natural graphite material introduced earlier this year; however, the egraf fredda™ technology allows design engineers to create complex threedimensional forms due to advanced material science. egraf fredda™ thermal management solution material distributes heat evenly in two dimensions, eliminating "hot spots", shielding components from heat sources and improving performance in consumer electronics. the unique thermal anisotropy and excellent conformability of natural graphite enable new cooling solutions not possible with other conventional materials.

egraf fredda™ components are custom designed and offered in a range of thickness, shapes and sizes. egraf fredda™ technology is covered by u.s. and foreign patents that are pending.

graftech is the first company to offer heat spreaders manufactured from natural graphite materials. these unique materials have an in-plane two-dimensional thermal conductivity that can be tailored to up to 500 w/mk and a through thickness third dimension conductivity in the 6-10 w/mk range. conventional heat spreader materials, such as aluminum and copper, move heat in all directions, but due to high contact resistance, they do not transfer heat from components efficiently.

introduced in 2001, the egraf line of electronic thermal management products meets the increasing thermal management demands created by the need for smaller, highly integrated and higher performing electronic devices. the egraf product line offers a full range of solutions, including thermal interface materials, heat sinks and heat spreaders. this year, graftech received the coveted r&d 100 award from r&d magazine for its egraf spreadershield™ thermal management solution. in 2003, the company received the same award for its egraf natural graphite composite heat sink. for additional information on egraf thermal management solutions, call (800) 253-8003 or email [email protected].
