Gear VR disabled in Samsung phones due to thermal concerns

in recent weeks, samsung has come under fire for the thermal runaway issues in its galaxy note 7, which has forced the company to make a costly decision to halt production.

just this week, oculus, which partners with samsung on gear vr (virtual reality), jumped in with a software update that disables all gear vr headsets on samsung devices. the decision, according to reports, was based on concerns that the energy from a lithium-ion battery fire could be transmitted into the headset consumers will be wearing.

as one report noted, “while higher temperatures haven’t been directly linked to the note 7 fiasco, higher operating temperatures can still be implicated in cases of thermal runaway.”

the statement from oculus read, “customer safety is our top priority. oculus is removing support for all note7 devices on the oculus platform. until further notice, note7 devices will not be compatible with the gear vr. for more information regarding the note7, please visit samsung’s information page or contact samsung directly.”
