Employing DCIM improves data center efficiency

for data centers to operate efficiently, from a thermal management, power, and storage standpoint, there needs to be cooperation between the data center manager and the executives that are running the company, according to jeff klaus, data center manager at intel.

klaus recently published an article for datacenterdynamics.com in which he outlined the importance of managers working with the “c-suite executive” to make sure that the data center had the proper infrastructure to be successful and also to ensure that it aligned with the organization’s overall business goals.

“on one side you have the c-suite strategically balancing the budget and fiscal priorities to find the biggest pay-off, while it is charged with keeping the lights on,” wrote klaus.

energy consumption is a key component, as data centers consume a significant amount of energy (the article noted epa stats that it could be 20 times as much energy as a normal office building) and klaus argued that all aspects of the data center must be considered to conserve as much as possible. this includes “the building, the facility’s components and the it equipment portfolio).

data center infrastructure management is klaus’ solution to this issue because it ties together all tehe different concerns by taking a “holistic” approach. it aggregates data to allow managers to see the whole process and improve energy efficiency, thermal management, operating costs, and component reliability.

klaus said, “in addition to streamlining usage, the enhanced visibility offered by dcim provides valuable insight into power hardware upgrades, data center server consolidations, and adoption of virtual servers, all of which drive energy efficiency.”
