mc-21, inc. (metallic composites for the 21st century) recently announced that it is producing tonnage quantities of hot-rolled al-sic sheet and al-sic ingot containing up to 45 vol. % sic. the al-sic sheet is being hot-rolled down to thicknesses of 0.5mm and even thinner in some formulations.
the al-sic ingot is being sold to shape-casting foundries where it is being remelted and cast into electronic baseplates and complex shaped components for high-speed equipment.
c-21 mixes the fine sic powders into molten aluminum and casts rolling slabs which it rolls on its three large in-house hot-rolling mills using low-cost, commodity mass-production processes. as a result of its low-cost mixing and rolling processes, and the fact that copper is 3.2 times heavier than al-sic, mc-21 is supplying thin al-sic sheet at prices which are lower than cu sheet on a cost per unit volume or material cost per part basis.

mc-21, inc. was founded in 1994 with the goal of reducing the cost of metal matrix composite (mmc) material production. in mc-21's stir-casting approach, the desired aluminum alloy is melted, and carefully sized ceramic particles are stirred in creating good wetting and a very strong bond between the ceramic particles and aluminum matrix. a broad range of mmcs containing a variety of types and volume fractions of ceramic particulate and of aluminum alloys can be formed using standard metal-working techniques, such as rolling and casting.
