Noctua Unveils New Electronics Cooling Products at Computex 2014

vienna, june 12th 2014 - at last week's computex taipei trade fair, noctua exhibited a wide range of upcoming products and novel prototypes. ranging from fans and heatsinks to be released soon over experimental concepts such as flock coated fans and cube base heatpipes to updates on its active noise cancellation project, noctua's line-up for this year's show has received excellent feedback from the international press.

three weeks after the introduction of its redux and industrialppc product lines, noctua has displayed upcoming new additions to its standard portfolio of fans: shown in prototype state at computex 2013, the new 20cm, 9cm and 8cm a-series fans are now approaching manufacturing and will be released in q4 2014. in addition to the new a-series fans, noctua has shown a first prototype of a 15mm slim 120mm fan as well as prototypes of fans using flock coating on either the impeller or fan frame.

the flock coating creates a turbulent boundary layer on the suction side of the fan blades (impeller coating) or inner side of the fan frame (frame coating), which results in better flow attachment and reduced flow separation. initial test results show up to 2db(a) lower noise levels in free flow and low impedance applications, but the technology is still in an experimental stage. the slim 120mm fan is currently scheduled for release in the second half of 2015.

the line-up of new heatsinks spanned from 150mm high end coolers to 1u server heatsinks and low-profile solutions. the highlight among the heatsink samples was a first prototype of an nh-u14s cooler with cube base heatpipes, a novel technology that opens new possibilities in cooler design by allowing to place more heatpipes directly above the heat source in perpendicular orientation without bending and with minimal heat-spreader bottlenecks. the sample on display was an early prototype based on the award-winning nh-u14s and featured 2 u-type and 7 cube base heatpipes. as the technology is still at an early stage of development, no eta can be given at the moment.

besides the cube base heatpipes, noctua displayed two prototypes of asymmetrical 150mm coolers. thanks to their asymmetrical design, these modified versions of nh-u14s and nh-d15 clear the top pcie slot even on matx mainboards and should be ready for release in q2 2015.

the displayed 9cm u-type and d-type (3u size) models will update the current nh-u9b se2 with further improved compatibility and performance. these models are currently being finalised and should be available in q4 2014.

in the low-profile range, noctua showed two 65mm high models: while the top-flow solution with 4 heatpipes is scheduled for release in late 2014, the prototype featuring an airflow path parallel to the mainboard is still at an early stage of development so that no eta can be given at this point. another low-profile prototype has been designed for amd's am1 platform. this model should be available by the end of the year or in early 2015.

for its increasing base of industrial clients, noctua is also preparing 1u and 2u class heatsinks for use in high airflow server chassis.

last but not least, noctua has given a progress report regarding its active noise cancellation project with rotosub. during the last year, the technology has progressed from rapid prototyping and hand-made samples to manufacturing test-runs that allow to produce a larger sample base for extended long-term testing. while long-term tests for aspects such as vibration, bearing life and the anc function itself are underway, noctua is finalising software and product designs for air- and watercooling applications. based on current estimations, first products could be ready in q2/q3 2015.
