visteon battery thermal management
the prevailing technology to meet the power demand of electrified vehicle is the lithium-ion (li-ion) battery. li-ion technology is more temperature sensitive than previous nickel metal hydride (nimh) batteries, requiring “human-like” temperature conditions. extreme temperatures can temporarily reduce the amount of power available, limit drive range and potentially permanently degrade battery performance and life.
visteon has manufactured battery thermal management systems for more than 10 years, starting with the first ford escape hybrid. utilizing vehicle and system expertise, visteon has developed components that can be applied in various system architectures to meet a wide array of customer requirements.
benefits
- maintains battery within temperature limits with an auxiliary air conditioning system for the battery pack.
- provides passenger comfort and battery cooling performance through its integration with the passenger air conditioning system.
- reduces package space requirements freeing up valuable engine compartment space through its space-efficient design (45 mm evaporator).
- offers improved fuel economy – battery can be cooled without using engine power for operation of the vehicle's air conditioner through its optional fresh air mode.
visteon’s family of modular and scalable components include:
- contact battery heat exchangers
- battery chillers
- low temperature radiators
- glow plug heaters
- auxilliary hvac modules
- battery thermal control strategies
visteon offers three flexible architectures for battery thermal management:
- coolant-based battery cooling and heating
- refrigerant-based battery cooling and heating
- other battery thermal cooling and heating
