austrian cooling components manufacturer noctua was one of many computer hardware companies to make the trip to taipei, taiwan for the annual computex conference and trade show and while there the company introduced its most advanced fan design to date.

noctua expanded its a-series of quiet cooling fans with 200mm, 120mm, and 40mm models that feature the company’s flow acceleration channels and aao (advanced acoustic optimization) frames. in addition, noctua also released a new fan controller, new anti-vibration mounts, and a new power adapter cable.
“customers have been asking us for 20cm and slim 12cm fans for years, but meeting the quality standard users have come to expect from noctua fans in these form factors has proven very challenging, so it took us quite some time to make sure that these fans live up to our name,” explained noctua ceo roland mossig.
he added, “the nf-a4x20 has been conceived following requests by our industrial clients who are looking for a 40mm fan that provides superior performance in pressure-demanding applications as compared to the existing nf-a4x10.”
according to the press release, the nf-a20 (200mm) is the largest fan that noctua has released and the mass of the impeller posed a much higher load on the bearings. the company overcame this by designing a larger diameter axis and larger bearing to distribute the load over a greater surface.
noctua also used a new fiberglass reinforced polypropylene (pp) material to reduce the mass of the impeller when compared to the standard pbt material.
an article from the tech report added, “enthusiasts have long praised noctua's distinctive brown fans for their blend of performance and silence. the company already sells fans optimized for airflow or static pressure, but optimal cooling performance tends to require a good blend of both. noctua's next-generation a-series fans aim for that mark.”
it added, “the fruit of noctua's hard-won efforts is a fan design that the company admits does not match the peak airflow nor peak pressure performance of its existing fans engineered for those purposes. however, the new fans simultaneously offer better static pressure and airflow in real-world conditions rather than a contrived test scenario. the end result is a fan that noctua claims can offer far superior overall performance than its existing designs while remaining whisper-quiet.”
